Abstract

Biofloc aquaculture is an effective approach for improving catfish production by maintaining water quality and providing additional nutrients through microbial aggregates. This study aimed to compare growth performance, survival, feed efficiency, and water quality of catfish cultured in biofloc and conventional systems. The experiment was conducted for 30 days using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two treatments, namely conventional culture and biofloc culture, with three replicates per treatment. Observed parameters included absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), temperature, and pH. Growth measurements were conducted at 10-day intervals throughout the culture period. The results showed that the culture system significantly affected catfish growth (P<0.05). Fish cultured in the biofloc system achieved a higher absolute weight gain of 5.12 g and absolute length gain of 4.50 cm, whereas the conventional system produced 4.43 g and 3.73 cm, respectively. The biofloc system also resulted in a higher survival rate of 97.4%, compared with 96.6% in the conventional system. Specific growth rate was 6.2% in the biofloc treatment and 5.8% in the conventional treatment. Feed utilization was more efficient under biofloc conditions, indicated by a lower FCR of 0.84 compared with 0.95 in the conventional system. Temperature and pH remained within suitable ranges for catfish culture in both treatments. These findings demonstrate that biofloc technology can improve catfish growth, survival, and feed efficiency while maintaining suitable water quality, supporting its application as an efficient and sustainable aquaculture production system
