Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of fermenting palm kernel meal (PKM) using two types of Effective Microorganism 4 (EM4)—fishery and agricultural—on the growth and feed digestibility of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The high cost of feed (40–60% of production cost) encourages the use of cheaper local ingredients such as fermented PKM. A completely randomized design with three treatments and four replicates was used: P1 (control, unfermented PKM), P2 (PKM fermented with fishery EM4, 8 mL/kg), and P3 (PKM fermented with agricultural EM4, 8 mL/kg); PKM comprised 50% of the formulation. Carp fingerlings (5–6 cm) were reared for 50 days. Observed parameters were absolute weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate (SGR), survival, and total digestibility (chromium oxide method). PKM fermentation significantly affected absolute weight gain (P<0.05): the control (2.15 g) increased to 3.57 g (P2) and 3.51 g (P3), while the two EM4 types did not differ significantly. Length gain (P=0.118) and SGR (P=0.054) did not differ among treatments. Survival reached 100% in all treatments. Total digestibility, measured on one pooled faecal sample per treatment without replication, is reported descriptively only (10.42–31.14%) and was not tested statistically. Water quality remained within supportive ranges. Fermentation of PKM increased the absolute weight gain of carp by about 63–66% compared with the control, with no significant difference between the two EM4 types under the conditions of this study. Fermented PKM therefore has potential as an alternative feed ingredient for carp, although feed conversion and economic feasibility still need to be evaluated
