Abstract

Mangrove crabs (Scylla sp.) are fishery commodities with high economic value that are widely utilized by coastal communities in Sorong Regency. The presence of ectoparasites in mangrove crabs may affect host health and reduce the quality of harvested crabs. This study aimed to identify the ectoparasite species infesting mangrove crabs and to determine their prevalence, intensity, and dominance in crabs caught by fishermen in Sorong Regency. The study employed a descriptive survey method at three fishing locations, namely SP3 Mayamuk, Klalin 2, and Kampung Kokoda, with 20 individuals examined from each location (n = 60). Ectoparasite examinations were conducted microscopically on the gills, carapace, and legs. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine species composition, prevalence, intensity, and dominance, while water quality parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and salinity) were measured to characterize the supporting environment. The results showed that the ectoparasites identified were Octolasmis sp., Zoothamnium sp., Epistylis sp., and Vorticella sp., which predominantly infested the gills. Prevalence values at Locations I, II, and III were 55%, 70%, and 90%, respectively, with Octolasmis sp. as the most prevalent and dominant species. Infestation intensity was generally low, except for Epistylis sp. at Location I, which reached a moderate category. All measured water quality parameters remained within the tolerance range for mangrove crabs, suggesting that the observed differences in infestation level were more strongly related to habitat and substrate characteristics than to water quality alone
